Finger Paint Girls Resized
Run in collaboration with the Newport Art Museum, our clients are able to attend the Coleman Center’s art classes and camps at no cost

The American Art Therapy Association recommends

“using the creative process of art making to improve and enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-being of individuals of all ages.”

With this in mind, it is not surprising that the Adopt-An-Artist program at Child & Family has been successful.  Through a partnership with Newport Art Museum, we cover the cost of materials and class fees which are offered at a reduced rate by the museum.  The majority of those who participate in these sessions are children from our group homes, however, adults and elders are also welcome to join.

Creating art allows a person to

  • Overcome stress
  • Increase self-esteem
  • Improve self-awareness
  • Achieve insight
  • Enhance mental health
  • Explore their personalities
  • Assist with communication

When you join us as a patron of the Adopt-An-Artist program, every paintbrush and lump of clay purchased holds endless possibilities because of your efforts.  For many, this is their first art camp and the highlight of their year.  Our youngest residents are faced with more obstacles in their life than most young children, and they are able to turn to art to express their feelings and work through their confusion.  For them, art is more than pretty pictures; it’s a powerful vehicle for communication and indispensable to their development.  The Adopt-An-Artist opportunity is just another way to reach out to clients and help them succeed.
